Our 9/11 Ceremony had the largest attendance to date. We had the Blue Chip Chorus of Bergen County, the Police Pipes and Drums of Bergen County and members of the EMS and Fire Department of Rochelle Park. Several members of the Borough administration also attended. It was the first time that Cub Scout Pack 188 and their parents plus members of Boy Scout Troop 114, who we sponsor, attended. Rochelle Park Mayor, William Hauser, made a short speech along with First Responder, Rich Cravello. Fire Chief Peter Donatello, explained and demonstrated the meaning of the Four/Fives which has been used as a means of communication between fire houses since the late 1800s. The crowning point, however, was a moving film presentation by Post 170 Riders Director, Jim Morton, which included all three locations that the terrorists attacked. This was the second time our country has been attacked…the first being Pearl Harbor.
Our Post is changing…not only membership which is declining, but in our handling of expenses. We started by changing our refuse hauler from Waste Management to Pinto Services of Lodi. Not only are we getting a larger container with the same service previously provided, but we are saving over $900 per month.
We have ordered a new portable public address system. A huge thanks to Dave LeRose for handling this project. The unit will be stored in the Post office which has been outfitted with a new door lock with limited key access.
We are waiting for Boy Scout Troop 114 to perform a service project in the lower hall so we can start renting it out.
We have also signed a contract for snow plowing and salting in anticipation of the coming winter weather.
A short Veterans Day service will be held at the Monument on Rochelle Avenue on November 11th at 11:00 AM. Please mark your calendar. Remember what the day is all about.
Don’t forget to set aside Saturday, November 24th at 5:00 PM for our annual Family Trim-A-Tree get together. Bring a covered dish to share with everyone, get two drinks on the house, help trim the lounge, hall and other areas and share in the fun with your friends.
There will be no meeting in November but there will be an Executive Board meeting on November 8th.
Please call Roberta O’Dowd (201-913-0437) with your e-mail address so that we can notify you about upcoming events. Leave your name, telephone number, email address and membership number (which is on your card).
For God and Country,
Ed O’Dowd, Commander
