Rochelle Park American Legion Post 170 Yearend report for 2016-2017

Rochelle Park Post 170 ended their 2016-2017 fiscal year with the annual Flag Retirement and Americanism Award Ceremony held on Wednesday June 14, 2017.
Prior to the ceremony, Commander Salvini presented school awards to students of Visitation Academy and to two students of Midland School. The award consisted of a certificate, medallion, lapel pin and $200 per student.
At the Department Convention in Wildwood on June 8-10 it received the 1stPlace Post award for donations to veterans hospitalized or homeless on the basis of donating over $30K. In addition it’s Web Master James Morton received 1st Place Web design for the county web sites (www.bcnjal.org), the Web site also received the 2nd place award at the National American Legion Press Club for 207, he also received 1st Place at NALPA for the post Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/RochelleParkNJAmericanLegionPost170/. Its newsletter editors. Loeky and Bob Salvini also received the 1st Place Newsletter award (3rd year in a row) for B&W multi page for posts over 1,000 members. And SAL Squad member Billy Pfaff won Media graphics award 2nd place for his Bergen County American Legion Convention journal cover, his design won 1st place last year.
The post with the help of the Rochelle Park Fire Department held its annual Flag Retirement ceremony and burnt over 800 flags as part of the ceremony and the post will also take part in the Bergen County American Legion 2nd Annual Ceremony to be held at the Bergen County Fire Academy on Saturday September 30th at 11AM.
After the Flag Retirement Ceremony the Post held its annual Americanism Day were it awarded certificates and a cash award ($50 1st place, $30 2nd place and $20 3rd place). The awards went to Grade K through 5 for Midland School and grades k-5 for Visitation Academy. It recognized their 2017 Boys State Delegates…
Certificates were presented to MLB Pitch, hit and run winners in Pitching, Hitting and running as well as the overall winner for age groups 7/8, 9/10, 11/12 and 13/14.
The Post, Unit, SAL and Riders presented scholarships to Thomas Morgan ( a 4 year, $1K per year), Rachael Krasic ($1500) , Lauren Leah Abrams ($1,000), Bruce Amundson ( The Ted Steltmann $750 scholarship), Karim Jassim (The Mary Ford $500 scholarship), and Samantha McElroy and Jennifer Cichino ($500 each).
In addition, the Post recognized members with 45, 50 and 51-72 years of continuous membership.
During the fiscal year 2016-2017 the post in keeping with its mission to serve the community, state and nation and live by the Four Pillars the Legion was founded upon made the following donations Boys Scouts $6,079, Charities $2,850, Children & Youth $6,635, Community $2,300, Scholarships $11,750, Veterans $36,500, and Americanism $2,555 and with other miscellaneous donations for a total of $67,736. All of these do not include donations made by family groups Auxiliary, SAL and Riders and does not include the many times it has donated the use of the Hall or Pavilion for other groups to do their own fund raising or for veteran and community outreach programs.
As Commander, I am extremely proud of our record in living up to our founders’ mission of serving the community, state and nation and living and breathing the four pillars we were founded upon Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism and Children & Youth.
I am also proud of the Post family and Memorial Day Parade Committee for sponsoring 20 Marines and Sailors on Memorial Day in for Fleet Week, a 2nd time for Rochelle Park but not the last.
