Rochelle Park American Legion Post 170 Memorial Day Press Release

It was with a heavy heart that Rochelle Park Memorial Day Parade Committee Chairman Brian Cronin and American Legion Post 170 Commander Bob Salvini, canceled the Parade scheduled for Monday May 30th at 11:30 and moved the Ceremony scheduled for 9:30 AM from the Monuments at Midland School to the Post home.

The turnout for the ceremony was SRO with over 100 people present which included the Rochelle Park  Mayor and Township Committee, EMT, Fire and Police Departments, as well as LoriAnn & Auldine Latko  (who sang Our National Anthem and God Bless America)  and Sid Somashekar  (who played Taps)  from Midland School.

After the ceremony as many awaited arrival of  30 Marines and Sailors from the USS Fort McHenry (a LSD class ship here for Fleet Week)  to arrive, as luck would have it  the sun broke through, just as the bus and van arrived  at the post and as we all know that was the end of rain for day. The marines and sailors were warmly greeted by the many post family members, friends and town residents present.  Commander Bob Salvini welcomed them and presented them all with the NJ Legion Centennial Challenge Coin designed to commemorate the Legion’s 100th Birthday in 2019. After which they were presented with goodie bags put together by the post family and the Navy Mom’s association.  They were completely surprised and overwhelmed by the friendliness and generosity of those present.

There was music provided by Fred Guarino’s Dixieland band and hotdogs were served in the hall and everyone had a great day. It was truly a heartwarming event for all present and we look forward to doing the same next year with the parade though.

For God and Country,

“We continue to serve”

Bob Salvini, Commander
